5 Big Trends Shaping Product Design in 2020

2020.05.18

Today, consumers need the latest technology more than ever. Moreover, they are increasingly willing to pay more for these technologies. However, they also want environmentally responsible products. They increasingly want to buy products from authentic, culturally relevant and relevant brands with real-time significance. Companies that design and manufacture products face more competition and need more consumers. Industrial designers must evolve with the changing times. Both industrial designers and businesses that create products need every advantage to give your product a competitive edge.

Then there are trends like automation, which immediately sounds super exciting and the benefits are fairly obvious (i.e. automation enables us to carry out fewer manual tasks). Product design trends such as automation will leave us in the dust if we don’t bring ourselves up to speed quickly.

Here are some ideas about 2020 Product Design Trends:

1. Environmentally-conscious products
Consumers globally are more concerned about the environment than ever before. Finding unique ways to design products for sustainable shoppers can also stay true to your brand identity.

2. Wireless tech
With the introduction of wireless technology, headphones aren’t plugged into devices, cellphones are charged without a wire in sight, and streaming has replaced the need for DVDs and CDs. With no slowing down in sight, designing a smart product in 2020 will be well received.

3. CBD everything
Since the 2018 Farm Act (legalizing the cultivation of hemp), CBD(cannabidiol) products have hit the market with no slow-down in sight. While it may appear to be a saturated market, there is a strong need for new high-quality CBD products.

4. Sustainable clothing
Fashion is the third-highest polluting industry in the world. Fortunately, today’s consumers, especially younger Millennials and Gen-Z, are aware of the problem and have shown with their voice and their dollars that sustainable fashion is important to them. Shoppers want to purchase from brands they trust. Take a sustainable stand on design and manufacturing and gain customers for life.

5. Design Systems
Design systems are arguably the hottest topic in product design right now. A design system is a style guide, UI kit, pattern library, brand guide, communication guide, and code documentation all rolled into one. There’s still a ways to go in regards to code being equally represented in existing Design System Manager (DSM) options, but we will change with the upcoming cloud-based Supernova.

Product design is changing every day — perhaps not as quickly as UI design or visual design, but changing nonetheless. It’s a fascinating time to be a product designer, but it does mean that we shouldn’t be getting too comfortable. Instead, we should be challenging ourselves to work better and allowing ourselves to be challenged by our tools, coworkers, and even the industry itself. Stay up-to-date and you’ll be totally fine.
